Method description
The program MEDIDIET® pertains in the category of so-called ketosis high protein diets designated to weight loss under medical or professional supervision. A unique attribute of well-balanced and correctly set up high protein diets is the fact that the organism in ketosis reduces body weight predominately from the adipose tissue („protein sparing“), which is objectified through weighting on the bioelectrical scale. It has its indications and contraindications which is why it has to be prescribed and supervised by a doctor or an experienced nutritive specialist. Aside from overweight and obesity, the main indications are hyperlipidemia (with unexceptionable results in lowering the level of cholesterol and triacylglycerols), hypertension, intolerance to glucose, hyperinsulinemia, diabetes II. type, liver steatosis, sleep apnoea, and others.
History and principle: In 1970, dr. Blackburn (future professor at Harvard, USA) began a research about starvation and in 1973 he formulated within the frame of his dissertation in Biochemistry of Nutrition the protocol Protein Sparing Modified Fast. It served as a base for the future ketosis diets.
The mechanism of ketosis diets is to induce the organism into ketosis, which develops itself thanks to the sufficient income (cca. 90g per day) of high-quality proteins (prepared from egg white, milk and soya) whilst restraining the income of saccharine and fats
Ketosis and hypoinsulinemia are responsible for weight reduction at the expense of the adipose tissue, instead of the muscular tissue and also for the excellent toleration of high protein diets (the protection of muscles as an energy source, a natural anorectic and slightly euphoric effect of the ketoacids overflowing the organism).
